Czech PM Necas, Fillon discuss EU economy

Paris/Prague - EU economic problems, energy and bilateral scientific cooperation were on the agenda of the talks of Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas and his French counterpart Francois Fillon today.

Necas is on a visit to France. In the evening, he is scheduled to meet President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Czech Republic is considering whether to join the nascent euro zone fiscal responsibility agreement. The document was on the agenda of the talks.

Necas said the Czech Republic considers many things the euro zone wanted to introduce thanks to the agreement good and it supports them.

This is the effort for balanced budgets and automatic punishment of those who violate agreed-on rules, Necas said.

However, the document should still only refer to the countries that already use the euro, he added.

According to a well-informed source, Necas and Fillon spoke about the countries' energy cooperation.

The French Areva is a bidder for the contract for the completion of the Czech nuclear power plant Temelin. The deal is also sought by the U.S. Westinghouse and a Czech-Russian consortium headed by Atomstroyexport.

Necas and Fillon also spoke about scientific and technological cooperation in the sphere of space research.

In the afternoon, Necas is scheduled to attend the conference New World staged by the French Industry Ministry at which speeches will be delivered by French Finance Minister Francois Baroin, economist Jean-Paul Fitoussi, Polish Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti as well as U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs.
