Czech press survey - January 5

Prague - The Social Democrats will try to ditch the government reform package, Martin Komarek writes in Mlada fronta Dnes, analysing their complaint with the Constitutional Court against it.

When it comes to the issue itself, the government was right as the majority can implement its political and economic reforms, Komarek writes.

However, from the technical viewpoint, the decision was unfortunate. The rules of the game should not be violated, even if they are not good, Komarek writes, alluding to the government having fused the parliamentary debates on the individual 14 bills into a single one in order to shorten the procedure.

However, the Constitutional Court is not guided by common sense, but by the spirit and letter of the law, which is a different thing. As a result, the outcome of the court proceedings is uncertain, Komarek writes.

The Public Affairs (VV) party is using the issue of church restitutions to bolster its fading popularity, Karel Steigerwald writes in Mlada fronta Dnes.

Church restitutions are not popular among the descendants of Communist rebels and zealous atheists, Steigerwald writes.

However, the voters who want to attack churches have more resolute representatives in the Chamber of Deputies rather than the small and lukewarm VV, he adds.

These are the Social Democrats and Communists whose rhetoric is much sharper. Anti-church voters do not need any lukewarm tea from the VV. They know whom to vote for and who will put an end to the churches' claims, Steigerwald writes.

The VV knows that church restitutions are unpopular and opposition to the plan will look good, Daniel Kaiser writes in Lidove noviny.

However, a month ago, participants in the U.N. conference in Durban decided to establish a fund against the impact of climate change in third world countries, he adds.

According to unofficial estimates, Prague is to send some five billion crowns annually to the purpose. Almost no one has written about it and no one seems to be outraged, although a large part of the fund is likely, as usual, to be embezzled and wasted on absurd projects, Kaiser writes.

Why have the VV and the rest not raised any objections to this? he asks. Author: CTK
