Toronto - Czech writer and exile publisher Josef Skvorecky died in Toronto in the night aged 87, his wife Zdena Salivarova confirmed the information by the Canadian server The Globe and Mail for CTK without elaborating today.

According to the server Skvorecky succumbed to cancer.

No funeral is planned, Skvorecky´s collaborator Vaclav Kristof said.

He said the last respects will be paid to Skvorecky at a ceremony in two to three months.

The famous Czech writer emigrated to Canada in early 1969 after the Prague Spring reform movement was crushed by a Soveit-led invasion by Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968.

Two years later he founded the Sixty-Eight Publishers with Salivarova, a writer and actress, that published works by Czech authors who were banned in the then communist Czechoslovakia. Author: CTK
