Czech PM praises Klaus´s realism, opposition dismisses criticism

Prague - Czech PM and Civic Democrat (ODS) head Petr Necas praised President Vaclav Klaus for having dismissed false optimism and false promises in his New Year´s Day speech today, while the opposition disagrees with Klaus´s criticism of pressure groups and unfulfilled EU entry expectations.

Necas also praised Klaus´ call for every citizen to behave responsibly. He said Klaus´s speech was a statesmanlike, presidential speech based on analytical thinking.

"The President rejects false optimism as well as false promises on the one hand and scaremongering with an economic Apocalypse on the other hand," Necas said.

He said he fully agrees with Klaus´s "appeal for responsibility of each of us and his call for support to the able, talented and industrious," Necas said.

Opposition Social Democrat (CSSD) chairman Bohuslav Sobotka said Klaus has told people the most about the country´s future out of all right-wing politicians even though he spoke rather in general terms.

Sobotka blamed Klaus for having spoken about the need for reforms without saying they must be just and socially tolerable.

Sobotka also said it is not possible to make a flat denouncement of "pressure groups" that stage protests against mistakes of the government´s policy.

"The causes of citizen dissatisfaction are connected with the unfulfilled promises of right-wing governments, their arrogant way of communication and the remorseless character of the reforms," Sobotka said.

Unlike Klaus who says the "unrealistic" expectations connected with the EU entry have not been fulfilled, Sobotka said he thinks that most of these expectations have been fulfilled - economic growth, an influx of investments, the possibility of working or studying abroad.

Radek John, chairman of the government junior Public Affairs (VV) party, said Klaus described two central problems: the euro zone´s problems and the rift on the Czech public scene.

VV deputy group chairman Vit Barta pointed to Klaus´s stress on reforms that are needed even though people perceive them as something that is hostile to them.

"I perceive it as a just criticism of the government coalition as well as, and mainly as a call for the coalition to complete the reforms and to lead them to concrete results," Barta said.
