House to be torn down in Prague reserve to make place for new one

Prague - The construction of a new massive modern house on the site of a neo-Renaissance one that is part of the Prague Heritage Reserve and that is to be pulled down has got the green light from the City Hall´s National Heritage Department, its director Jan Knezinek told CTK today.

He said the new house represents "new and creative architecture" and that he thinks that "it is what Prague needs."

The process of approving took two years. It is not yet known when the the new building designed by the DaM studio will be built because it will depend on further procedure.

The investor is the owner of the house to be pulled down. Experts say the neo-Renaissance house does not have any exceptional heritage value.

The new house is to be built after the design of Petr Burian and his colleagues from DaM who have designed the Euro Palace in the lower part of Prague´s Wenceslas Square that some praise for its architecture.

The Prague workplace of the National Heritage Institute has been against the project. It objected among others to the demolition of the old house.

It said the new house will not add Prague any new value for which the old house should be sacrificed.

The final word rests with the City Hall, however.

This is not the first case in which the City Hall has decided at variance with the National Heritage Institute´s stand. Author: CTK
