Prague - People in Prague and other places of the Czech Republic observed a minute of silence to pay their last respects to the late former president Vaclav Havel, with church bells ringing throughout the country at noon today.

A requiem mass for Havel is being served in St Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, with European and U.S. top political representatives attending. Crowds of people are standing outside the cathedral, following the ceremony on giant screens.

Hundreds of people gathered at St Wenceslas Statue in Prague´s centre, where thousands of candles have been burning, to pay tribute to Havel.

Trams stopped in the city´s centre for the moment.

Friday is the last of the three days of national mourning in the Czech Republic.

Havel died on December 18, aged 75. He had health problems for a number of years. He was the last Czechoslovak president (1989-1992) and the first Czech president (1993-2003).
