Most Czechs do not consider churches useful - poll

Prague - Most or 60 percent of Czechs, do not consider churches useful institutions, according to a poll conducted by the polling institute STEM earlier this year and released today.

The proportion of Czechs considering churches useful institutions has been largely steady in the past years. This year, it is 40 percent, against 42 percent a year ago.

One-quarter of Czechs are of the view that churches are definitely not useful.

The view that "they are rather useless" is held by 35 percent of Czechs.

Some 9 percent definitely agree with the view that churches are useful, while 31 percent say they are "rather useful," the poll has found.

"Those believing in God and claiming some church, the Roman Catholic in particular, tend to see churches useful more often than the rest," the pollsters said.

Some one-quarter of those not claiming any church also believe that churches are useful, while one-third of those declaring themselves as Roman Catholics do not consider them useful institutions.

"When it comes to those claiming other denominations, the proportion is substantially higher, reaching almost 50 percent," the pollsters said.
